Summary of Labour Party (LP) Party’s Manifesto

Formed: 2002 (formerly Party for Social Democracy – PSD)
Ideology: Centre-left to Far-left; Social Democracy

The Labour Party (LP) was officially formed in 2002, evolving from the Party for Social Democracy (PSD). It is heavily grounded in socialist principles, emphasising social justice, equal opportunities, and people-centred development.

For many years, LP remained on the fringe of Nigerian politics until now, when Peter Obi, a former Anambra State governor and ex-PDP member, emerged as the party’s presidential candidate in the coming 2023 general elections. His candidacy seems to have revitalised the party, especially among urban youths and the middle class, often called the “Obidients”.

The Labour Party now champions transparent governance, economic equity, and strong social safety nets, presenting itself as a progressive alternative to the status quo.

The party’s manifesto for the upcoming 2023 general election is as follows:

  • Vision:
Social democracy with job-led economic growth and equality.
  • Economic Plan:
Industrial revival, manufacturing expansion, and cautious engagement with globalisation.
  • Security:
Emphasis on social justice, reducing poverty to curb insecurity.
  • Education:
Universal free primary and secondary education, increased funding for science and technology.
  • Health:
Public healthcare expansion with increased government involvement.
  • Anti-Corruption:
Reform of public institutions and stronger oversight.
  • Infrastructure:
Integrated transport system (rail, roads, waterways), electricity expansion.
  • Social Welfare:
Strong labour laws, union rights, and social safety nets.
  • Federalism:
More decentralisation, but national cohesion remains key.
